Engaging communities on climate action: key learning from London boroughs

This event was part of London Climate Action Week 2021, the annual event bringing together world-leading climate professionals and communities across London and beyond to find practical solutions to climate change.

This event has already taken place and registration is no longer available.

Time: Thursday 1 July, 10:00 – 11:00AM (BST)

Duration: 1 hour

Councils are under pressure to tackle the climate and biodiversity emergencies, while also delivering a green recovery from coronavirus. They need to act fast, with practical solutions that bring everyday benefits such as better jobs and clean air, as well as lower emissions.

These proven climate solutions already exist. Right now they are unlocking greener transport, warmer homes, improved community cohesion and much more. But local authorities are under pressure with limited resources, and sometimes lack the skills and expertise to create change. We don’t have time for councils to learn in isolation or act alone.

That’s why Ashden created three regional local authority learning hubs, identifying successful initiatives and showing how they can be quickly adapted and implemented locally.

This seminar will present key findings from the learning hubs that Ashden ran with London boroughs earlier this year to share learning on how best to engage communities on climate action.

We’ll present examples of how different boroughs are engaging with local communities on their climate programmes and top tips for how to segment, map and prioritise stakeholders and ensure that everyone is heard.

We’ll also cover options for financing community climate action involving communities.

As part of the session, we’ll also be hearing from:

  • London Borough of Lambeth – Theresa Greene – about the council’s Citizen’s Assembly on Climate Change
  • London Borough of Richmond & Wandsworth – Aimee Brough – on working with the Youth Council on climate action
  • London Borough of Enfield – Harriet Potemkin – about the borough’s work to engage schools on climate action
