Press comment: BP profits – government must prioritise ordinary citizens, not fossil fuel companies

Simon Brammer, Head of Cities at climate solutions charity Ashden said: “Our energy system is clearly not working – except for the oil and gas companies that are making enormous profits at the expense of us all. Despite high energy bills for millions of households and businesses, the government is giving huge subsidies to these international companies. In fact, the recent windfall tax introduced by Rishi Sunak includes a tax break worth £11 billion for the industry.

This is entirely unacceptable. The government should stop prioritising the interests of these large corporations and start focusing on the needs its ordinary citizens. We need to fix our energy system for good. That means taking action to make energy bills affordable by delivering a massive programme of home energy efficiency to end the awfulness of fuel poverty once and for all.”
