tepeo’s Zero Emission Boiler (ZEB®) is a smart, efficient alternative to a traditional gas, oil, LPG, or electric boiler. It works with a hot water tank to deliver low carbon and low cost heating. The ZEB has the potential to heat millions of UK homes in a sustainable and cost-effective way.

Key features include its ability to charge at times of the day when electricity is cheap, before releasing heat into homes on demand  and its ease of installation compared to other low carbon technology. A qualified plumber can replace a traditional boiler with a ZEB in as little as one day, without any need for new pipework or radiators.

Heating and hot water make up 17% of the UK’s territorial greenhouse gas emissions. Crucially, the ZEB is a smart storage heater powered by grid electricity – an increasingly sustainable energy source, as the UK generates a growing amount of clean power.

As a result, the ZEB can create between 2.5 and 3 tonnes of CO2 savings a year, when replacing a gas boiler.

The ZEB’s smart features include its ability to monitor electricity tariffs. This means it can charge itself at the cheapest point of the day, or when the climate impact of doing so will be lowest (although these two are often one and the same). Peak power prices can be 300 to 400% higher than those during the least expensive part of the day, so even with electricity prices higher than gas this saving makes the ZEB cost comparative with gas.

tepeo is an expanding company, now employing 60 people. It manufactures the ZEB at its headquarters in Wokingham, Berkshire. The device can be installed by qualified plumbers after just half a day of training.

One part of a sustainable heating mix

The ZEB has advantages over heat pumps and other sustainable heating systems – it is easier and quicker to install, requires less space, and doesn’t disrupt the way consumers use energy. But the UK’s zero carbon transition will need a range of home-heating solutions, suitable for different property types – the ZEB could be an important part of this mix.

As of September 2023, the ZEB can only be installed in properties with a hot water tank or who are willing to have one installed. However, tepeo is developing a new version, suitable for a wider range of homes. This new version will be a direct replacement for a combi boiler and is due to be released towards the end of 2024.
